Activator pres. “Lover’s Rock” 2010 - A Valentine’s Mix By Dougie Boom
...I bet you thought i forgot about you on Valentine’s baby.
Happy Valentine’s everybody! Here is the 2nd installment of Lover’s Rock for 2010. I really cut it close by releasing this on Valentine’s Day… but making love is a year round sport so its never too late. Fuck rocking a party, i’d rather rock that body.
Activator pres. “Lover’s Rock” 2010 - A Valentine’s Mix By Dougie Boom
DIGISNAIL - The Brain
here’s a mix our good friend DigiSnail from the Hammer (Hamilton, Ontario) made a couple weeks ago.As you can probably tell, punctuality is not our strong suit.
Devlin & Darko - Hands of Tyme (guest mix)
I’m a big fan of guitar-music DJ mixes so here’s one from Devlin & Darko for Austrailian radio show, The Hands of Tyme: Music from the Psycadelic Era, read about it and grab the mix from their blog.
KINGDOM - FABRICLIVE/FOOL’S GOLD MIX
This Friday we have a MONSTER ngiht at Sophisticated with both Bonjay and New York’s Kingdom blessing the stage.
Here’s a mix Kingdom did in support of the Feb. 5th Fabric x Fool’s Gold party to set the tone for the collective pre-drink session.
Cover Your Ears : Episode 1
This is Cover Your Ears.
Every week i will feature covers good and bad
because its all opinion.
This week ‘Shack Up’.
Originally by Banbarra from 1975, this song affectionately displayed the growing change among adults concerning marriage. ‘Shack Up’ shows us that living out of wedlock can be sinful and fun. This song has been covered numerous times (eg Bis, Blackbuster) but these two i think are the best.
DJ BIG JACKS - FUNKY 4 YOU
From Black-Rap.com.
EGYPTRIXX - Live from FUCK FACES, 01/08/10
EGYPTRIXX debuted his live P.A. set at Fuck Faces last weekend, and thanks to the dudes at Dubplate.fm, we got (most of) it on tape! Well, not actually on a tape but recorded anyway. As i drunkenly declared on Twitter during his set, if you didn’t show up, YOU FUCKED UP BIG-TIME!
DJ B.CAUSE - Playin Kinda Rough: The Roger Troutman Legacy
Found this on the Nerdtorious Blog and since we have another ACTIVATOR coming up, i figured it was relevant (When is Zapp/Roger ever NOT relevant?!?)
Bay Area ace, DJ B.Cause salutes Roger and Zapp with an ultra fun mix of famous tracks, rap choruses, interludes and a healthy dose of cuts and blends. Like his other work, everything is well-selected and ironed out. This is perfect since interest in vocoders will likely peak real soon. Peep the mix, the rest of B. Cause’s work, and familiarize yourself beyond “Computer Love”.
“The Situation” meets “The Incident”
The Fat Jew from Team Facelift interviews The Situation from Jersey Shore. There’s not much else i can say about this that wouldn’t be accomplished by watching the Youtube.
Pandemonium Jones - Splendid Moments 2009
Here’s the second annual “Splendid Moments” mix from our good buddy Panda Jones. Here’s what he had to say about it:
I thoroughly enjoyed the first Splendid Moments mix and it went wood on the internet to boot, so I made another: another year in California, another farm in the mountains, another hazy, gazy, lazy mix of sensitive whiteboy daydream music. This year I was even less focused on current releases as a result of an increasingly hippie lifestyle and my reliance on Pitchfork’s Best New Music picks is embarassingly evident but I’m happy to report that the ends in this case justify the means. There really are some splendid moments, in the songs themselves which I obviously can’t claim credit for, and also in the transitions. It flows, baby. There’s also a misstep or two, but 2009 was a wabi sabi sort of year so roll with it.Like SM2008, the mix skews toward the easy listening end of the spectrum. There’s nary a club banger in sight, probably owing to the fact that I didn’t set foot in a club all year. I did, however, play a party in the barn depicted on the “cover.”
A-Mac - Soak You in My Mentals
Here’s a mix from our homeboy A-Mac in Calgary. Can’t help but think a deranged YouTube session we had with Caps N Jones inspired the title…
LEE’S PALACE historic mural gets the axe
But apparently there’s gonna be a new one up in it’s place. Read this article from The Torontoist because they actually know whats going on.
Big Fat Burrito is moving into Lee’s Palace, and the building’s iconic painted façade, featuring monsters of every colour and form stretching across the length of the building’s first storey and reaching up to its second, has been quietly moved out. This morning, construction workers began to break apart the wall—painted by artist Runt twenty-something years ago—piece by piece, the result of a deal struck in June between Big Fat Burrito and Lee’s that will see the take-out restaurant lease out space in the music venue and the entrance to Lee’s moved to the building’s side. Standing beside a few pieces of the mural cut out and saved for Runt (most of the rest of it landed in a dumpster around back), Big Fat Burrito owner Mike Shepherd explained that his store will open in two weeks’ time, the new second location for a store whose flagship is in Kensington Market.
Rather than stucco and concrete and mesh, Shepherd said, the building’s new façade will be metal, and it’s that new façade that’s being turned over as a new canvas to none other than Runt, whose work will fill the wall anew by spring.
Calls to Lee’s Palace this afternoon were not immediately returned, but according to Shepherd, the rest of Lee’s will continue to function just as it does now, and, when it opens, Big Fat Burrito will be selling concert tickets, too.
The Sheen Brothers - Scumbag Funk Vol. 2 (Mixed by Cosmo Baker)
On the greasy tip, Cosmo Baker and Toronto’s own 4th Pyramid are back with another Scumbag Funk mix, (you can nab Scumbag Funk Vol. 1 (Mixed by 4th Pyramid) right HERE). Here’s what Cos had to say about it:
Yeah, let’s go! Here it is, the one and only Sheen Bros “Scumbag Funk Volume 2” mixed by yours truly. It’s 40+ minutes of nothing but that afrosheen. For those that don’t know, Sheen Brothers is me and my homie 4th Pyramid. We jokingly decided to come up with a funk / rap group earlier this year, but then after a couple shows and some recording things actually got serious. So with dedication and focus, Sheen Bros is a full on go. Check for the original EP dropping spring of 2010, as well as the LP later on that year featuring an insane lineup of guests.
Can’t wait to have these guys back, and it might happen sooner than you think.
BRANDON SEK - DVNDVNDVN
Brandon Sek from the infinitely-better-than-ours Curb Crawlers blog made this mix yesterday and guess what? It’s good!
Do yourself a favour and download this “warehouse + space + thriller + electric + science + chicago + sleazy + vocoder + hand clap + detroit + strings + mood + siren + roland + delay + acid” mix for your music player thingy.
JOTS rock mix
Here’s a mix our friends Jokers Of The Scene did for Nicky Digital’s “Pre Party Jams”. Nothing I love more than guitar-music mix tapes that aren’t made by teenage dudes trying to get laid.
Gregg Nice’s Melon
No disrespect, but what was up with Greg Nice’s Melon back in the day??? ....and the bowler hat doesn’t help, it only amplifies the chromedomium. Smooth Bee had the right idea: I’m not wearing this stoopid hat. Great group. I would always like to think that live they don’t use vocal delays just repeat themselves all night. They also sing amazing.
WHITE LIGHT MIX SERIES - #14: Andrew Allsgood
Andrew Allsgood (one of the original residents at our 6+ year monthly FUCK FACES) just put out a mix for White Light.
Here’s what he had to say about it:
This mix is my interpretation of “cosmic”, as outlined in the parameters of the White Light series. The mood is laid back and somewhat contemplative with a theme of traveling and returning home. With all of the various feelings that electronic music, disco, techno, house & other forms of “dance” based music can convey, I was excited about showcasing some more emotive songs. A mix for the headphones, the after, after party or bathing..........in the white light!!
Dmoney pres. “TV EYES” - A Dougie Boom Halloween Mix 2009
MY GOD WHY WON"T YOU STAY DEAD!!!
Yes, that’s right its back! This year’s Halloween Mix is finally up! Please move the children away from the speaker . When I promised a couple weeks ago that this was going to be “Darker than Bill Duke on the dark side of Pluto on a really dark day” I should have said “Darker than Bill Duke on the dark side of Pluto on a really dark day wearing ‘the Crow’ make-up and stilletos”. Yes that dark. Happy Halloween everybody!!! hope you git a chance to hear it and feel free to share this!

M.A.R.K. 13 Coming To Blu-ray
The film Hardware, released in 1990 (killer robot in a post-apocalyptic junk shop tries to kill Dylan McDermott and his girlfriend) is getting the 1080p treatment November 10th. Not that i have a Blu-ray player or really remember if this movie is any good, but Iggy Pop and Lemmy are in it and Ministry is on the soundtrack. Yay 1990!
PERFECT POP - A Mix By Dougie Boom
This is something i put together for Nuit Blanche. The title is a bit misleading, there isn’t that much pop on it. Think of it as the worlds most portable installation piece or a musical companion for your travels through the city this Saturday.... desperately searching for art, entertainment, a lover, fun or just something thing to f*cking do.
Perfect Pop by Dougie Boom
Also, its my mf birthday, Sunday. Im an ole’ man.
DMoney presents: 60 Minute Workout Mix by Dougie Boom
About a year ago i was inspired by Mike Tull’s “Workout’ series. With a different take on it, I thought of doing a mix that was called 20 minute workout that was exactly 20 minutes and 20 songs, all about working out for working out. A couple months of compiling and refining and here it is. Now 60 minutes and 60 tracks, I had to put it out because I started jogging a couple of months and i wanted to make a mix to run to. This is the result:
ANDREW ROSS & BRANDON SEK - Live At Rolly’s
Last Friday while i was at the Drake with BRENDAN BRING’EM, our brothers in arms were down the block doing their thing. they have brains and decided to record their sets. (Why didn’t I think of that?)
Many apologies for the lack of blog posts recently. It’s been a pretty crazy month with gigs and sadly maintenance has taken a bit of a back seat. Lots and lots of stuff to come soon so keep watching this space!Last Friday, Andrew Ross (of Nacho Lovers) and I hosted a lovely Acid City house party at everyone’s favorite converted car garage on Ossington, Rolly’s.
Our hopes were to record the entire night but unfortunately, Ableton stopped the capture ten minutes into Dirty Dales set. We were able to salvage Andrew and I’s three hour back to back session and thought it would only be fitting to post it here for archives.
I suppose it’s a bit rare to hear a recorded set from the doors opening to peak hours. You can certainly hear the progression in the recording from slow and moody 115bpm head nodders to upbeat deep tropics closer to the end.
Happy Canada Day! The Last COTTAGE COUNTRY Part 4 is up!
HAPPY CANADA DAY!
So This Is It! 150 songs, 4 cds and hours of work. The last Cottage Country mix IS DONE!. I hope to do a Cottage Country chill out mix a little later but this is the last rocking Cottage Country mix. So eat it up kids. Hip yer friends to it...spread the love.

MATTHEW AFRICA - The Best of DJ Quik
MATTHEW AFRICA just dropped this ‘best of ‘ mix dedicated to DJ Q-U-I-K with no C, and here’s some of what he has to say about it:
I made this mix because people sleep on DJ Quik. Maybe they’ve forgotten or maybe they never understood, but people don’t get the breadth or depth of his talent.Quik’s commercial peak was his platinum 1991 debut, Quik Is the Name. Although he released three more gold albums, it’s been years since he’s had a label push and, aside from a fluke Fixxers single in 2007, since he’s had a hit on the radio.
Here’s the thing, though-- Quik never fell off.
You can read the rest HERE.

NACHO LOVERS have a hard on for New York
Three weeks late and copied/pasted from the FOOL’S GOLD BLOG :
It’s about time we started a monthly podcast, so here it goes - the inaugural FOOLCAST, done up all nice by Toronto’s Nacho Lovers. The resulting “I Nacho NY” mix is, in their words, an “ode to New York house from the 1990’s. Everything is either by a NY artist, NY remixer, was released on a NY Label, or just fit that New York ’sound’ of the time. This is stuff we are heavily influenced by when it comes to making music.”
Download the podcast (and subscribe to the whole series to get future mixes as soon as they drop!) at iTunes or via your favorite RSS reader at the FG podcast page. Tracklist after the jump, more heat on the way!

BARBI & LUCIE TIC - Two new mixes for SOPHISTICATED
Two brand new mixes from SOPHISTICATED DJs BARBI & LUCIE TIC. Both mixes come in at just under half an hour, so they’re perfect getting ready to go out soundtracks.
The first mix (Barbi’s) has an 80’s focus, while the second (Lucie’s) is mainly techno/tech-house. Both sum-up the vibe put forth by the new monthly; no-nonsense, musical dance music, leaving the powertool/buzzsaw bass and gimmicky, juvenile blog house stabs on the curb. Enjoy.

BO BLIZ - 1st & 15th Vol. 9, Club Shit Vol. 1
Bo Bliz over at CROSSFADED BACON just dropped this mix of club shit with a little hip hop.
Bo:
“Alright so I mixed this one up a little. Some semi-new stuff and a lot of slept on shit. Too many times when I hear people play club music they play all the same five old songs or some new unrecognizable garbage. THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE. There is loads of hard-ass club that people forget about that its a sin. Haven’t y’all heard about that “new-old shit”?
I threw in some obvious stuff, but like all my mixes, this is one to listen to and not an effort to confuse people with tracklistings. “

ALIXANDER III + FLASHBOYZ - New Shit & Remixes
From the horse’s mouth:
”Alixander III & The Flashboyz bring you Party After Party. A ghetto dance party anthem that is soaked with heavy 303 bass-lines, a booming 808, and vocals composed and processed through a very “circuit bent” Casio Sk1. A rally call for all late night party kids to keep it popping.
On the remix tip, Scott Seewhale (1/2 of the Nacho Lovers on Fools Gold) serves up some swinging disco house while Definitive’s Matt Herdman returns to his electro side with a roaring bass line driven mix to keep the dance floor rocking. . Rich Simmonds adds a little tech house flavor to the release with couple a mixes as well.”

PANDA JONES - Splendid Moments 2008
Pandemonium Jones (along with his partner in crime DJ CAPS of CAPS & JONES fame) is in my top 3 when it comes to DJs. They consistantly put out genre-spanning, mind-blowing mixtapes of stuff that i would never listen to in a million years, and this one is no exception.
This “best of 2008” mix is a little on the mellow side, so don’t expect to hear and 140 side-chain bangers (that’s a good thing sometimes by the way).
In his words: “The mix is called “Splendid Moments” and I think it lives up to the title. Many artists and genres of music are conspicuously absent, so it does not reflect my Overall Favorite Songs Hands Down, but rather some well regarded joints that sound good together. I’m very pleased with the results and I hope you like it, too”

DJ QUIK RADIO DROPS
Anyone who knows me, knows i love DJ QUIK, and recently I was lucky enough to stumble on a bunch of drops he did for a few California radio stations, mainly 92.3 The Beat.
One thing I love about a lot of these is that even though they’re supposed to be promo spots for a radio station, Quik still manages to bring it back to a depressing, introspective and personal place, (like rapping about dead friends or the fallout with his sister and nephews over a crystal meth operation they were running, which eventually landed Quik in jail).
Most of these are on the older side but there’s a more recent one with AMG as promo for the shelved FIXXERS album, MIDNIGHT LIFE.
Amazing.
THE FIXXERS (Quik & AMG) - Power 106 drop
QUIK & AMG - A Bedtime Story (92.3 Drop)
DJ QUIK & MAUSBERG - Realizm (Julio G Drop)
DJ QUIK & SUGA FREE - What We Do
DJ QUIK - Everyday Thing (Theo’s Drop)
WEDNESDAY NITE RIPPERS VOL. 6-"THE DJ IS HOT (REMIX)"-BEAT MASTER CLAY D
SOME PEOPLE SIMPLY DESERVE MORE PROPS THAN OTHERS...CLAY D COMES CORRECT IN 87’ ON ROCK FORCE RECORDS WITH “THE DJ IS HOT (REMIX)”
....AND ON A MORE SERIOUS TIP, HERE IS A MESSAGE TO ALL THE YOUNGSTERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF TALKING TO STRANGERS (EVEN IF THEY SAY THEY KNOW YOUR MOM AND DAD)....MR. T GETS SERIOUS AND FUNKY ALL AT THE SAME TIME.... “DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS” MR. T
HOUSE - Dougie Boom’s Halloween 2008 Mix!!!
Finally finished this for Halloween. Dougie Boom’s “HOUSE - Halloween mix” for you cats. I started compiling Halloween tunes after i finished last year’s Halloween mix (look below), which was hard to top. But when i decided to go with the cover for House (the horror movie from 1986), I decided to make this more on the house tip. So there’s a bit of tech shit, Electro House, Classic House, Acid House, even a track that’s kinda on the deep house vibe. But of course theres a little bit of everything (gay disco, club shit, italo, new wave, it gets goth at the end). But there’s lots of good acts on here. (Green Velvet, Armand Van Helden, Crookers, Judas Priest, Fake Blood, Kavinsky, Bauhaus vs three six Mafia....)Anyways let the music do the talking, the rest can walk.
RE-POST!!! “Things That Go Boom In The Night” Dougie Boom’s Halloween 2007 Mix
People were asking me where they could get last years mix. Last year i was Douglas Blogless, so our good friend Sek put it up on his Curb Crawlers Blog. It got a pretty good reception and people keep downloading so i thought i would drop it on here. A new Dougie Boom Halloween mix will be up soon!!!! but for now....

DRUMS OF DEATH
There has been big buzz surrounding this man for a while now and finally Toronto can check out his live performance. Drums of Death is on tour with Hot Chip right now and will be playing at Circa this friday. For my money, he is one of the most interesting producers and peformers out there. Go to the show so you can tell all your friends next year that you were into him before he blew the fuck up.

No Particular Order Vol. 2: Top 10 Essential Dance Tracks
Hello everybody! It’s Dougie back with another edition of No Particular Order. This week it’s Top 10 essential dance tracks. These are tracks that in the 10 years I’ve been djing always seem to spark the party off, under most circumstances. Think of it as the Swiss army knife of tracks. These tracks can make Grandpa Joe jump out of bed or turn a funeral into the jam of the year. Let’s begin:
1)Donna Summers - “I Feel Love [Patrick Cowley Remix]”
Europe could not get enough of the original. So, Patrick Cowley (RIP) went back and made it a 16-minute long dubbed out epic. The other night I was spinning at the Drake Lounge and i related to Bryce (Vitamins For You) that i needed to take a break and i was djing by myself. He suggested this track, which i had thankfully had with me. So not only is it killer but essential for the mad dash/break if your djing solo.
2)The Clash - “Rock The Casbah/Mustpha Dance”
One of the best basslines of all time. I think this track is so effective because it has a little something for everybody: Punk, disco, dub, 80s. This is Clash mixing politics and pleasure.
3)Ram Jam - “Black Betty”
Okay this is not a dance track per se, but that kick/high hat exchange is house music ten years before it dropped. I usually play this as the last song of the night and people lose there shit to it.
4)New Order - “Blue Monday”
People know what song this is just from the kick in the beginning. A classic.
5)Grandmaster Flash - “The Message”
A classic. I love the dubbed out high hats in the break.
6)Daft Punk - “Da Funk”
Its one of those beats you can identify in the first bar and when that kick comes through it just confirms it. Its that slow 4-on-the-floor house tempo so it seems to mix with everything. Its true, you can judge how good a production is when it still sounds good pitched up or down at any tempo.
7)Zapp - “More Bounce to the Ounce”
I think one of the reasons why this song is so infectious is because its been sampled so many times. It just sits there in your subconscious mind and is instantly recognizable. A crowning achievement of west coast funk. RIP Troutman brothers.
8)Yazoo- “Don’t Go”
Remember they played this in Tango & Cash with the stripper with the huge fan behind her. I think i was 10 or something and it was the first time i listened to it. I recognized it, I mean, I had heard it before, no doubt. The synths just cut right through. This one made last years Halloween mix (http://www.divshare.com/download/2576204-02a)
9)Prince-"Kiss”
Love the Linn Drum programming on this one. Its one of those beats that have alot of swing but seem to mix with everything.
10)Run DMC vs Jason Nevins - “It’s Like That”
...because its like that and that’s the way it is.
I used to hate this remix but it can’t be denied. People love songs about inner city pressure (like ‘The Messsage’, look at that). This one also touches on world problems too but isn’t a party killer. How they do that?
Honourable mentions:
Kiss - ‘I Was Made For Loving You”
Salt N Peppa - “Push It”
Debbie Deb - “When I Hear Music”
Stardust - “Music Sounds Better With You”
Technotronic - “Pump Up the Jam”
Eurythmics - “Sweet Dreams”
George Kranz - “Din Da Da”
Michael Jackson - “Wanna Be Startin Something” / “Billy Jean”
Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock- “It Takes Two”
Kano - “I’m Ready”
Tag Team - “Whoomp, There It Is” (which coincidentally samples the Kano song^^^)
Shout outs to: Shit La Merde, Ziggy, Mike Tull, Grahmzilla, St. Mandrew, Egyptrixx, Sarah & Miss Jackie Brown for their 2 cents.
Until next week…

No Particular Order Vol. 1
Whut up! This is the first edition of No Particular Order. Every Thursday, I’m going to list my top tens of any musical subject. So, for this first edition i’m going to list my top 10 favourite artists/acts of all time (a task that proved to be a lot harder than i thought). But here it is (IMO, in no particular order):
1. The Rolling Stones
I know what you’re thinking. Fuck these guys: old business men, ripping of all there session musicians, beating the horse to a pulp. But it can’t be denied. And when you meet a girl who says she prefers the Stones over the Beatles, she’s a girl after your heart.
2. The Clash
These cats are amazing. I don’t even really consider them punk all that much. They’re more like working class hero music (like country or blues). All their albums are dope ,except Sandinista! (1980) & Cut The Crap (1985)...which is crap. They made one of the most essential dance tracks of all time: “Rock the Casbah”, which will probably make my next top 10 (next week): Most essential dance tracks of all time.
3. Japan
Man, these dudes are SO under rated. You either get it or you don’t. During the seventies they were glam rock, then they became more disco (working with Giorgio Moroder) and then in the 80s (when everything was going Duran Duran), they were making these deep abstract albums with Japanese influences. Get all of their albums, they’re all killer. David Sylvian is a pimp, here’s proof:
4. Eric B. & Rakim
Gotta have Hip Hop and who better to choose. They were that bridge between Rap and Hip Hop, No more party disco raps, straight lyrics of fury. What happened to peace?
5. Parliament/Funkadelic
There’s cats are so very necessary. You would have no p-funk, no electro, no hip/hop and even rock would have suffered without them. They have such a huge output that its hard to list essential albums (with so many off shoots like Bootsy’s and George Clinton’s solo efforts.) But you need them in your life. So put a glide in your slide, a dip in your hip, and come onboard to the Mothership. If i could get in a time machine this would be my first stop (man our generation is getting ripped off):
6. Bad Brains
I loved Bad Brains when i was a young buck growing up in the burbs (still do). Rastas playing punk but man these dudes kill all hardcore/punk bands. WERD.
7. Prince
I used to ride around on my tricycle when i was 5 and pretend i was Prince (ala Purple Rain). There i said. I digress, music would not be the same without him. Unfortunately, Prince is crazy about keeping his work under lock and key. So, no videos...i wanted to post the I would Die 4 U live video with Shelia E (where she is going buck wild on percussion and Prince is humping the ground and shit).... oh well:(
8. Kraftwerk
Kraftwerk are those dudes. “Pioneers of electronic music” is not a cliche when you talk about these dudes. Their music was the mission: they did there best to conceal themselves as real living people (they tried to sue Wolfgang Flür, their ex-drummer for releasing personal information about the band in his auto-biography). David Bowie wanted to have them as his back up band in the 70s (they respectively declined). When they came to Toronto, i missed it, but i heard there were 50 year old men crying at the show because they were so overwhelmed. The mantra in this video: “Fun, fun, fun on the Autobahn” was actually influenced by the Beach Boys “Barbara-Ann” (serial).
9. David Bowie
Speaking of Bowie, what would music be without the Thin White Duke. A huge catalogue with different fazes. He’s like the Picasso of modern music. Albeit alot of his session musicians and producers were a key role to this but it can’t be denied: there will never be another.
10. The Cars
The Cars might be my favourite group of all time. What are they? They’re not New Wave, they’re not Rock, they’re not Punk, they’re not Synth Pop & they’re not Glam. There the MF Cars, all their albums are good. ALL OF THEM.
Honorable mentions: Alan Braxe, Aphex Twin, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Brian Eno, Buzzcocks, Can, Carl Craig, Change, Chic, Cybotron, Daft Punk, DJ Funk, Drexciya, Egyptian Lover, E-40, Fleetwood Mac, Front 242, Gino Soccio, Giorgio Moroder, Godflesh, Green Velvet, Guns N’ Roses, Hamilton Bohannon, Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop, Jammin Gerald, Judas Priest, Kano (italy), Larry Heard, Like A Tim, Medicine, Micronauts, Miles Davis, MMM, Motorhead, My Bloody Valentine, N.W.A., Nitzer Ebb, Ornette Coleman, Patrick Cowley, Paul Johnson, Prince Charles & The Big City Beat, Roxy Music, RUN DMC, Schooly D, Seefeel, Skinny Puppy, Sly & The Family Stone, Soundhack, Suicide, Sun Ra, Thin Lizzy, Too Short, T. Rex & Zapp.
Until next week...top 10 essential dance tracks.
See Ya!!
MONDAY NITE SPOTLYTE : BOMBAMAN
Welcome to the 1st edition of MONDAY NITE SPOTLYTE...This first spotlight is dedicated to Dubstep/Idm/electro producer, BOMBAMAN.....This guy is doing a great job of representing Canada in the Dubstep world with his solo productions and his dubstep project, Loetech, with fellow Tdot producer, Xi. Bombaman has just released a mix on Hype fm via the Curb Crawlers blog....This mix is a good way to familiarize yourself with the Toronto Dubstep Scene, most of the tracks produced or remixed by the Bombaman himself....
PRETEND LIKE YOU GIVE A FUCK ABOUT GHETTOTECH
Like everything else in the digital age, ghettotech music has been decentralized—and for the better. Historically exclusive to chicago and detroit, great new booty records are dropping in france, belgium and london.
Raziek from Montpellier, France has been putting out some really forward thinking juke music (i think discobelle called it eurojuke...no comment) and just recently got picked up by DJ Godfather’s Databass label. 5 fingers is exactly what any good ghettotech track should be: fast, catchy and obscene as shit. This track could make Silvia Saint blush. Here is the preview version, go grab the mastered version on Beatport.
I have mad love for Non-Stop DJs out of London, they’ve incorporated the UK approved heavy bass sound into their tracks which always have top notch production quality (which is far from universal in ghettotech). I love the dark reese bassline in “what I like” and have been playing the hell out of this track ever since it dropped.
WEDNESDAY NITE RIPPERS VOL. 1-"DO THE ALF"-BASS PATROL
WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION OF WEDNESDAY NITE RIPPERS...EACH WEEK I WILL BE DIGGING THRU MY CRATES TO RIP A RECORD THAT I THINK IS FRESH....TONITE WE ARE FEATURING BASS PATROL AND THEIR SONG “DO THE ALF”.........(1988 JOEY BOY RECORDS)....I TEND TO HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR BASS MUSIC ABOUT MUPPETS, SO WHEN I SPOTTED THIS RECORD I HAD TO HAVE IT....I ALSO NEVER MISSED A EPISODE OF ALF WHEN THE SHOW CAME OUT....DJ FURY IS THE MAN BEHIND BASS PATROL AND DESERVES HUGE PROPS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO ELECTRO & BASS MUSIC.....
BOOTYBEN and BE TRASH
Y’all know how much i love the europeans!! The scene in Bordeaux, France, is poppin’ thanks to BOOTYBEN and the BE TRASH crew...These guys all have their own styles of deejaying and producing....MR. FREAKY, NOUCH, BORDERLINE, EXPLCT, MARIO K and BOOTYBEN all produce music and have been throwing BE TRASH parties for a few years now and taking them all over europe....yes...DETROIT and MIAMI are alive and well in Bordeaux, France.

JIMMY and SAMMY
I played this hot sweaty dance party recently in Kensington...underneath this new clothing store that Sam opened called Multi...and at 1am, i decided to buy this jumper...which is now my favorite jumper in the world...you’ve probably seen me wear it a million times since i bought it a few weeks ago...anyway..the brand of this jumper is called CTRL....and it’s logo on the buttons is a direct copy of the Cross Colours logo and style...remember the Cross Colours dancers from the 90’s? .....Jimmy also has his art and shoes for sale...and i think there’s some talks about T-shirts? Man, you should see Jimmy cut hair on his myspace...there’s actual footage of him shaving his own head in front of a mirror..and his hair design...and i mean if u like all the crazy lines and such....it’s madness…

DJ ASSAULT talks to me
I had a chance to have a little chat with Dj Assault when he came with Dj Funk to Circa on friday. Everyone had a great time and when I asked Dj Assault about his visit to Toronto, he replied, “ I don’t wanna leave!!!”...I think we’re gonna see him in the Tdot more often....
DJ FUNK and DJ ASSAULT
Pictured above from left to right...MYSELF, DJ FUNK, CRYO
Our good friends at A.D./D. presented Dj Funk and Dj Assault in the main room for Randomland @ Circa over the weekend. I’ve never experienced Booty House and Ghettotech in the main room in front of such a big crowd before in Toronto. The crowd went nuts the whole time and I’m pretty sure I saw some Ass and Tiities as well as some Bitches and Hoes.

Egyptrixx Mini Tour (w)Rap up
So alias and I were down in the states for a few shows last week. Our first stop was Pittsburgh PA. Just let me say that pittsburgh is the man, DJ Geoff Cutups is also the man. Really though, i was totally surprised—no offence Pittsburghians but I was expecting Hamilton with more bullets. Pberg is full of really cool art spaces, amazing views, really dope architecture and some fun parties. Some Paper Rad cats were doing visuals at the Lazer Crunk party we played, which was great, im a big fan of their work. We had fun and I’m looking forward to going back.
Our show in Harrisburg was cancelled becasue of some venue issues, so fuck you city of Harrisburg liquor bylaws. Instead we crashed at a Super 8 in Breezebrook, PA. drank amstel, ate dennys and blew up some cheap fireworks.
Next up was the Whartscape Festival in Baltimore, run by the Wham City crew. Whartscape is 3 days of really good music all set in completely DIY venues. Example: The Death Set playing in a north Baltimore parking lot for a couple thousand kids.
I was really excited about playing the afterparty with Spank Rock, Girltalk, Cex, Ninja Sonik, Dan Deacon and a bunch of locals, but it ended up being a bit of a lesson in venue planning. Not surprisingly about 1500 people showed up to a warehouse that held 400 and the sheer insanity, heat, sweat and number of bodies totally overwhelmed the place. People were falling on the soundguy, speakers were exploding, bottles were being hurled, gear was melting… Eventually the cops showed up and booted us all the fuck out. We managed a small set but it was just such a fucking gong show that we lost sound about every 5 minutes. That aside it was a great night and I really enjoy the grittyness of bmore. We also caught the Clipse, DJ K-Swift’s (RIP) last show, ate alligator and saw Batman for 4 bucks.

CFCF @ NONSTOP this Friday
This Friday we have CFCF rolling through for NONSTOP at the Drake.
Mike Silver is a Canadian producer on the rise. Ever since he won a Crystal Castles remix contest, the remix offers have been pouring in. So far he’s worked with Health, Sally Shapiro and Teenagers and it doesn’t look like he’ll slow down any time soon. He’s also known to spin a record or two as well. Should be a great night!
Club Queen K-Swift - Rest In Peace
Tragic news out of Baltimore, Club Queen and 92Q radio personality K-Swift (born Khia Edgerton) has passed away after a drowning incident in the pool at her home. She was 27 years old.
Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends.

Weekend Recap - July 4th & 5th
Mike Tull & Paul E. Lopes brought the funk to Activator, Friday night (Wrongbar)
DMoney team with St. Mandrew in front of the ever-present curtain of despair, Fuck Faces, Saturday (Sneaky Dee’s)
Finger Lickin’ Good
Last weekend was another one of those 4am slug-fests at The Drake with ELI ESCOBAR on Friday for NONSTOP, and one of the craziest, most exhausting (12 hours!) and history making parties I’ve ever been involved with, LIVE @ THE BBQ on Sunday. I’ll post a slew of photos and videos as they appear (this party was well documented by people other than myself) but for now, here’s a video of DJ STARTING FROM SCRATCH showing off his moves.
ARI UP of THE SLITS
I recently befriended Ariane Forster a.k.a. ARI UP , frontwoman, vocalist and songwriter of legendary all girl punk/new wave band, THE SLITS. She was lovely and everything I knew she would be in a person...brings a tear to my eye....THE SLITS were one of the first groups to fuse punk, dub, reggae and world beat sounds together along with The Clash....for those who know...Ari Up’s mum has been romantically involved/married (no one is even sure whether they’re legally married, not even Ariane herself) for over 25 years to Johnny Lydon a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, lead singer of the SEX PISTOLS....what a life!
Parties are WAY Over-Rated
yeah so, parties are fun and all, but going up north to cottage Country is about three-million times better. the only thing that sucks is that i couldn’t find my camera, and my phone is somehow full. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!
It’s also Fistfight Andrew’s Bornday today (last night) and it was sorta fun making him drink booze. He tried to get me to do some beater dances but i declined. I mean fuck, that aint my role right?
Friday Night Here, Friday Night There
DAVE NADA & TITTSWORTH @ Wrongbar, Friday night.
BIG JACKS @ Edumacation, Drake Underground, also Friday night.
Are you ready for these Double D’s?
So, tonight we got our two good friends coming back up to do big thangs at Wrongbar: Dave Nada & Tittsworth. Dmoney was the first to bring them up here to Toronto, separately but together, on their Double D Tour, its going to be a madhouse. No sleep in Parkdale tonight.
The Democratic Island of Thunderheist
Our good friends,Thunderheist, are giving you 3 choices but its not gas, grass or ass. Its for their new music video “Jerk It” and they want you to vote for one here. Its a tough decision, but I’m gonna go with tha jerk chicken, even though the last video has our good friend Lucie innit. Don’t hate me, Lucie. And apologies to Isis. She made me laugh the other night and i accidentally spat in her face.
thunderheist - jerk it from thatgo on Vimeo.
Wake me when I’m dead.
So every spring in Toronto, the NXNE Festival rolls into town, and gives us all an excuse to drink until 4am (which ends up being more like 8am).
We set things off on Thursday night around midnight with the POP Montreal showcase featuring KNIFEHANDCHOP, MAYSR and MEGASOID among others (there was a lot, I have no intention of tracking down everyone’s myspace page).
Friday night saw us at two parties simultaneously with Vancouver’s U-TERN & NEOTERIC holding it down with DJ LAW and New York heavy-hitter DJ EVIL DEE @ Circa, and then closing things out with the J.O.T.S. boys at the Drake Underground.
I had no intention of going out Saturday, but i ended up at The Gladstone for some MuchMusic afterparty, where THUNDEHEIST performed on a teenie tiny stage (accompanied by SWAGGER) and somehow made it work. And then to Wrongbar where i hid in the back room where they keep empties til 5 in the morning.
Then sleep, wonderful sleep.
YO BARLETTA!!
Wake up Tdot!! There’s a new kid in town...his name is DJ BARLETTA...his remixes have been posted on Missing Toof, Palmsout Sounds and Crux da House a.k.a. Crux Records(OH SNAP!, BRYAN COX, 3 IS A CROWD, DEVIANT SOUNDSYSTEM, JAIMIE FANATIC, HOSTAGE, CHEW FU), who have recently signed him up for some releases..his Lollipop (Lil Wayne) remix is a dance floor popper and he’s recently remixed one of my tracks with Syntonics...YO BARLETTA!!
ARABIAN PRINCE (N.W.A.)
My friend, ARABIAN PRINCE a.k.a. Professor X (N.W.A.), graced us last night with a killer set of old school electro, 80’s freestyle and proto hip hop....this was part of Peanut Butter Wolf‘s Stones Throw Party with Egon, James Pants, Dj Taktiks and myself (Barbi)....i was showing Arabian the pics i took while his buddies Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupiter were in town playing one of our Dmoney parties, Activator...he says that he tours with Egypt and Jamie a fair bit and they have this live show that all 3 of them do...i hope that we’re able to bring all 3 of them back in this form…

Friday 13th - who will survive???!!!! part 2
Next its a race over to Drake Underground, where we’re bringing from our nation’s capital, The Jokers of The Scene. The Jokers’ production is so spot on right now, its disgusting. With them from Vancouver, Smoke & Mirrors (U-Tern & Neoteric), who have something coming out on Dubsidedlabel (Switch/Dave Taylor’s label). So, that’s two great Canadian acts tonight. And, through Her Majesties good graces (& NXNE), there shall be drinking till 4. I will be upstairs, however, in the Drake Lounge, so come check me!
Facebook event right thurr!!!!
Friday the 13th - who will survive???!!!!
I had an electrical blackout in my house today (a little disconcerting). Now i’m doing everything all speedy, in case it happens again.
Tonight’s one of those nights where the Dmoney puts the busy in business.
First, we at Circa w/ EVIL DEE & BIZARRO w/ DJ LAW, U-TERN & NEOTERIC In the Mirror Ballroom @ RANDOMLAND Circa (126 John St).
